Nominations may have been extended until 11:00am (AEST) on Tuesday but as it stands the Bjorn Baker-trained Cantonese is the most notable entry for Saturday’s ATC Frank Underwood Cup 2012 at Warwick Farm.
Formerly known as simply the Frank Underwood Cup and run over 1900m at Canterbury, this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed ATC Cup will be contested over the extended distance of 2200m and held at Warwick Farm.
Perhaps the most intriguing entry for the staying showdown is Redoute’s Choice five-year-old Cantonese who will be shooting for their third win on the trot this weekend.
A three length winner at Warwick farm two back over 2200m the gelding dropped back to the 2000m last Saturday and easily accounted for Moriarty in a Rosehill feature.
The English import joined Baker’s Sydney operation earlier this year and has won three of their five runs this time in, an effort that has surpassed what Baker originally thought them capable of.
“I’ll nominate him for Saturday and see how he is this week,” Baker said.
“So far he has exceeded my expectations.”
With the horse Cantonese beat home last Saturday, the Chris Waller-trained Clodovil five-year-old Moriarty, also among the early Frank Underwood Cup nominations there is a strong chance the duo could clash again seven days later.
“Moriarty could back up,” Waller said.
“It would be his third run in three weeks so he will be fit.
“I’ll take a look at the nominations. He’s still going through his grades but if it looks like being a weak race then we could give him his chance.”
Cantonese may already boast a win over the 2200m at Warwick Farm but if they back-up Saturday will be Moriarty’s first look at the distance, although Waller isn’t worried about them stepping up in that regard.
“Moriarty is a tough horse and will be fine to run again at Warwick Farm,” he said.
“He’s racing well and will run the 2200m right out.”
Other notable entries for the race include Levi’s Choice who got the better of Moriarty in a 1900m handicap a fortnight ago, veteran Zabeel nine-year-old Fiumicino coming off a distant third in the Bendigo Cup, the David Pfieffer-trained local mare Dreamworker, Port Macquarie galloper King Utah and last start Hawkesbury winner Ward.
The Frank Underwood Cup is a traditional lead-up to both the $100,000 Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on December 15 and the always popular $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2400m) held on Boxing Day, December 26, back at Rosehill.
