Big Summer Carnival for Goulburn Cup Winner 2012 Kinnersley

Top Sydney Gai Waterhouse is eyeing off the Sydney Summer Racing Carnival riches for her smart six-year-old Kinnersley after their much improved effort to win the 2012 Goulburn Cup over the weekend.

Goulburn Cup winner Kinnersley will likely target the Sydney Summer Carnival features over the coming weeks

The Al Maher gelding, runner-up in the Ipswich Cup during the winter, resumed at Hawkesbury at the start of the month but failed to beat home any of their rivals when dead last in the Listed Ladies Day Cup (1300m).

On Sunday however they relished getting back up in distance and were able to overcome the 59kg top-weight and salute in the $100,000 Listed Goulburn Cup (1600m), Waterhouse’s first win in the race.

On the line Kinnersley ($13), ridden by Tommy Berry, had a quarter length to spare over the Jason Coyle-trained Scream Machine ($8) who had 5kg less on their back while Alma’s Fury ($5.50) was a close third finishing off the Goulburn Cup trifecta a half-length off the winner.

It was a thrilling finish with Berry guiding Kinnersley through a narrow gap in the final 200m to score the win, the horse’s second stakes success adding to their Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) victory at Rosehill back in May.

“I don’t think anyone should send one of Gai’s out at that price after only one bad run,” Berry said of Kinnersley’s $13 starting price.

“We had a beautiful run but I was worried until the gap came for him in the straight.

“It’s good to see he still has spring in his legs.”

Having accounted for their rivals at Goulburn second-up over the mile Kinnersley will now continue onto bigger and better things this summer season in Sydney.

Berry, also aboard for that win, is hoping to continue his association with the in-form Kinnersley over the coming weeks having provided connections Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds with a number of successful rides over the past year.

“He’s a versatile horse and his form was very good in some feature staying races last season,” Berry said.

“I won a Listed race on him last preparation. He’s a funny horse, if everything goes right for him he wins.”

As for where to next Berry believes Kinnersley could be competitive in an upcoming feature such as the $175,000 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Warwick farm on December 22 or the $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on Boxing Day four days later.

“Kinnersley could win a race like the Villiers Stakes or the Summer Cup, whatever Gai wants to set him for,” Berry said.

There is also a chance Waterhouse will head south all the way to Tasmania with the Goulburn Cup winner and target the Hobart and Launceston Cups in February as Denise Martin has a strong connection with the Apple Isle.
