Barakey To Head East After 2012 Winterbottom Stakes Win

Barakey has kept his unbeaten race record alive to win the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday November 24, 2012.

The five-year-old won the race by half a length ahead of Power Princess, who flew from behind to place second, and Spirit Of Boom, who finished a gallant third.

Barakey led the race early with Travinator, who could not keep up with the pace and ended up finishing at the tail of the field.

The Key Business gelding will now travel east to contend the Sydney and Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnivals in 2013.

However, trainer Jim Taylor does not foresee a clash with champion mare Black Caviar next preparation.

“We wouldn’t take her on at weight-for-age,” he said. “We wouldn’t be silly enough.

Black Caviar

Barakey will likely avoid Black Caviar (pictured) when he travels east for the 2013 autumn.

“If she wants to take us on in a handicap, that would be fine as we would have 10 kilos less than her.”

Barakey is expected to run in feature sprints such as the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap.

“We won’t go silly next year with him,” Taylor said.

“He’s a five-year-old and had a couple of leg issues, so we don’t want to over-race him.”

While Taylor was quick to rule out a clash with Black Caviar, the same did not go for his ex-stable star Hay List.

While the trainer feels Barakey would come up trumps if the two did battle in the west, he is keen to see how Barakey would fare against Hay List in Sydney or Melbourne.

“If he raced Hay List at Ascot on a firm track, he would beat him as Hay List has trouble with his feet,” Taylor said.

“On the softer tracks in the east, they would be very comparable.”

Barakey has won all 11 of his race starts and has earned more than $650,000 in prize money.
