Academus Beats Home Locals in WA Guineas 2012 – Results

Peter Snowden’s progressive Sydney galloper Academus enjoyed their maiden Group win over the weekend when they saluted as the equal favourite and got the better of the Perth locals in the 2012 WA Guineas at Ascot’s Railway Stakes Day.

The Lonhro gelding has now won two of their seven starts to date, Academus backing up from a good fourth in a Listed race over 1400m at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day, relishing the drop back in weight from 60kg to 56.5kg to win the $350,000 Sky Racing W.A. Guineas (1600m).

It was the horse’s second look at the mile with Academus having also run a brave third to Sizzling in Brisbane’s Group 1 TJ Smith over the 1600m back in June.

On Saturday the equal $4 favourite with Luke’s Luck was ridden by ace Sydney jockey Kerrin McEvoy and the duo had just a nose to spare over the brave Neville Parnham-trained runner-up Bippo No Bungus ($41), who came off a second to Fuddle Dee Duddle in the Group 3 Champion Stakes over the same track and distance, on the line.

Simon Miller’s Stratum filly Darlington Abbey ($17) then finished off the winning WA Guineas trifecta when crossing three quarters away from the winner, Champion Stakes winner Fuddle Dee Duddle ($11) running fourth.

Equal favourite Luke’s Luck meanwhile could only manage to finish two lengths off Academus in fifth.

It was a speedily run Guineas thanks to a hectic pace set by outsiders El Rijes and Hussy By Choice, McEvoy keeping Academus prime third on the outside until the frontrunners lost steam and the winner shot forward to hit the front with 150m left to travel.

Fast finishers Bippo No Bungus and Darlington Abbey however made plenty of ground over the final 100m down the centre of the track and it was a brave effort for Academus to hang on for the win.

“He did a great job to hold after being left as a bit of a sitting duck so to speak,” Peter Snowden’s son Paul said on Saturday.

“We were waiting for something to come and get us, but he was too good.

“We were confident pre-race, but not so much over the final stages.”

The complete 2012 WA Guineas results are detailed in the table below.
