Since the 2012 WA Guineas betting odds were released for this Saturday’s three-year-olds’ classic at Ascot Racecourse there have been a number of major market moves including the firming price on new favourite Antique Belle.
Grant Williams’ in-form Redoute’s Choice filly opened as the $4 second favourite behind $2.50 top elect Luke’s Luck in the bookmaker.com.au markets for the $350,000 Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m).
However the filly has now surpassed her male rival in the WA Guineas odds now at a quote of $3.50 while the Luke’s Luck, prepared by last year’s winning WA Guineas trainer Trevor Andrews (King Saul), has eased right out to $3.60.
Drawn on the rails with barrier one for Saturday, Antique Belle burst into WA Guineas contention two starts back when she easily accounted for her rivals winning the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) by two and a half lengths.
The Burgess Queen Stakes has been a nice recent guide for the Guineas producing two of the past four winners with fellow fillies Clueless Angel who completed the double in 2009 and Moccasin Bend who ran third in the Burgess before her 2008 WA Guineas triumph.
So with fillies having held their own against the boys in the past few editions of the Guineas the punters aren’t shying away from the firming price on Antique Belle who is out to improve on her last start third behind fellow Saturday rivals Fuddle Dee Duddle ($11) and Bippo No Bungus ($31) in the Group 3 Champion Stakes (1600m) which was her first look over the mile.
Along with the former favourite Luke’s Luck who comes off an eye-catching third to defending Railway Stakes winner Luckygray in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) other horses that have eased out in the WA Guineas markets include:
- Peter Snowden’s Sydney raider Academus ($4.80 out to $5)
- The Darren McAuliffe-trained last-start Fairetha Stakes winner Rebelson ($8.50 out to $12)
- Snitzel gelding Dominating coming off a Fairetha Stakes second ($14 out to $21)
Others that are seeing some love along with Antique Belle then include:
- Last-start Pinjarra winner over the mile Antoccino ($101 into $51)
- Lindsey Smith’s Red Ransom filly Fuddle Dee Duddle ($16 into $11) coming off a Group 3 Champion Stakes win over the track and distance
- The Simon Miller-trained Hussy By Choice ($41 into $26) out to improve on her close Champion Stakes fifth
