Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This year’s Victoria Derby third place-getter Rawnaq is being prepared for an unusual autumn campaign that will see the Redoute’s Choice colt run in the 2013 Australian Derby third-up during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
A winner of one of their seven starts to date, Rawnaq improved notably on their 12th in the UCI Stakes at Flemington last month when they ran an eye-catching third to Fiveandahalfstar as a $101 roughie in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) on November 3.
Last Saturday the three-year-old contested the Sandown Classic and could only manage to run six lengths away fifth to Tanby, an effort Hayes was not completely disappointed in.
“The last bit of his race was fabulous on Saturday,” trainer David Hayes said.
“He’s a real quality stayer who will be prepared exclusively for the Derby in Sydney in the autumn.”
In the paddock now enjoying a well-earned rest Rawnaq will be bought back next year where they will be thrown into the big time right off the bat with Hayes naming the $500,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (1600m) on March 30 for their resuming run.
Following that the promising stayer will then go second-up in a 2000m event before their big assignment in the $1.5 million Group 1 ATC Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 13, 2013.
“He’s going to have a three run campaign into the Derby,” Hayes told TVN.
“I don’t think you’ll see him again until he’s first-up over 1600 metres in the Rosehill Guineas. Then he’ll go to 2000 metres then the Derby – just the three runs.”
