It’s Crunch Time Bites Rivals – 2012 Tasmania Newmarket Hanidcap Results

Short-priced favourite It’s Crunch Time bought their good form from Victoria all the way down to Launceston on Wednesday night when the Doug Harrison-trained galloper beat home the locals in the Tasmania Newmarket Handicap 2012.

It's Crunch Time

The lightly-raced Fusaichi Pegasus gelding jumped as the $2.70 top elect for the $90,000 Listed Country Club Tasmania Newmarket Handicap (1200m), It’s Crunch Time coming off a sixth in a Listed feature on Crown Oaks Day at Flemington.

Overcoming their wide barrier 10 draw the Stephen Maskiell-ridden raider enjoyed a successful interstate debut narrowly hanging on to beat home the luckless Dream Flyer ($20.40) by a long neck with the David & Scott Brunton-trained Punctuate ($8.60) finishing off the winning trifecta just a further quarter length away in third having led throughout.

There was only a length separating the first five past the post in this year’s Tasmania Newmarket Handicap with Punctuate’s stablemate Galibier ($3.70) fourth and Rebel Bride ($13.10) fifth.

Star Tasmanian jockey Maskiell was thrilled with the win, his record breaking eighth in the race having surpassed Max Baker with seven, which he had been targeting this season.

“(Local Tasmanian trainer) Gary White let me know the horse was likely to come for the Newmarket so I did my homework on its form and then I set about trying to secure the ride and it all panned out well,” Maskiell said.

“This is the race I’ve wanted to win for a while to get the record on my own and it feels great to have finally achieved that goal.

“He is a very nice horse and had the right form to win this race. I want to thank the connections for putting me on.”

Connections would have been thanking Maskiell for his ride too, the talented hoop getting the job done despite It’s Crunch Time having been caught three-wide early.

Getting onto the back of Rebel Bride, It’s Crunch Time enjoyed a bit of luck at the hands of the Troy Blacker-trained runner-up Dream Flyer who was travelling nicely inside the eventual winner before getting held up for a moment when Rebel Bride shifted in.

Winning Cranbourne-based trainer Harrison said post-race that It’s Crunch Time may race on in the Apple Isle during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival targeting the weight-for-age races over 1200m and 1400m.
