Last Saturday’s Sandown Cup winner Ibicenco may not be seen racing down under next season with the now Peter Moody-trained former European having to undergo surgery for a bone chip leaving their Sydney Cup 2013 campaign under a cloud of doubt.
Previously prepared by ace English trainer Luca Cumani Shirocco stallion Ibicenco travelled to Australia for the spring originally set to target the famous Melbourne Cup.
After a seventh in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup and a luckless fourth in the Lexus Stakes however the five-year-old missed out on a start in the ‘race that stops a nation’.
They did score a small consolation prize for connections when, still under Cumani’s care, they took out the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) on November 17 earning a $100,000 bonus as a horse balloted out of the Melbourne Cup field.
Since transferred to the Victorian stables of Moody Ibicenco was to enjoy a spell before being bought back in the autumn where their grand final target would be the $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup over the two miles at Royal Randwick on April 27, 2013.
Those plans may have to be shelved however with the OTI-owned galloper booked for surgery that will likely see their return set back to late autumn according to OTI’s Terry Henderson.
“Unfortunately Ibicenco sustained a small chip in his fetlock on Saturday and that’ll have to come out,” Henderson said.
“So he won’t be around until late autumn.”
