Ross Stitt’s Taree-based galloper Youthful Jack enjoyed a successful raid on the Tasmania Summer Racing Carnival at the start of the year and now they are eyeing the riches on offer at the Apple Isle once again as the temperatures begin to heat up at home.
The veteran Youthful Legs gelding was sent to Spreyton trainer Adam Trinder last summer and was undefeated in their three runs in Tasmania winning the Listed Thetote.com.au Stakes (1200m) at Launceston, the Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) and then the George Adams Plate (1600m) during February.
All three weight-for-age races are again on the cards for the now seven-year-old early next year who has been in the paddock awaiting their new season return for the past three months, Stitt happy with how they’ve been progressing.
“I’m getting him ready to go back to Tasmania for the three weight-for-age races,” Stitt said.
“He looks good, his breathing, which has been a problem in the past, is now 100 per cent and his work has been first class.”
Youthful Jack hasn’t been able to win a race since their Tassie triumphs but Stitt is hopeful a return down south back to Trinder’s care will see them back in the winners’ stall.
“Adam did a first-class job with him last time and I can’t afford the time to be away in Tasmania,” Stitt said.
“I have too many horses here to look after.
“I am really pleased with the way the horse spelled.”
They were last seen running a brave fourth to Pepperwood in the Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m) in August when carrying a hefty 60kg.
Showing they were ready to get back to the business of racing Youthful Jack won their first trial of their new campaign on Monday when defeating stablemate Lunaverse by four and a half lengths over 1007m.
Their new season debut is now scheduled at Warwick Farm on December 1 which will be one of two starts in Sydney along with the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) on the 22nd before they head to Tasmania where they will run there for the first time on January 23 for the $90,000 Tattsbet.com Stakes (1200m).
Their other assignments are then the aforementioned $100,000 Thomas Lyons Stakes on Hobart Cup Day, February 10, and the $100,000 George Adams on Launceston Cup Day, February 27.
