Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday Perth’s Ascot Racecourse will host their biggest race day of the year with a bumper 10-race program set to run for Railway Stakes Day, the opening black type on the card being the Tattersall’s Cup 2012.
Due to jump as Ascot Race 4 at 1:20pm the $80,000 Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2100m) has this year drawn a final field of just eight hopefuls.
Top-weight of the Tattersall’s Cup field is the Lou & Dion Luciani-trained Guyno who has 58kg meeting all of their rivals 4kg worse.
Drawn on the rails with Jason Whiting to ride the veteran O’Reilly nine-year-old is third-up for the season and looking to break a nine month winning drought.
They enjoyed a brilliant summer – autumn campaign that included a second in the Perth Cup, win in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) and a Group 3 success in the Lord Reims Stakes over 2600m at Morphetville.
However they would spend nearly a year on the sidelines after breaking down in the 2011 Adelaide Cup, returning at Ascot in February for a failed two-run campaign after which they were again sent to the paddock for a length seven and a half month break.
They have had two runs this time in but are yet to recapture their old form, Guyno last seen running 10th when beating home just one other runner in the Listed Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) on November 10.
Ascot Gold Cup third placed Moonlight Bay also backs up in the Tattersall’s Cup on Saturday, the Grant Williams-trained Catbird mare drawn in barrier six with William Pike to ride.
There are then two last-start winners in the Tattersall’s Cup field with Smart Twister and Starlight Lady.
The Neville Parnham-trained Smart Twister is drawn ideally in gate three, the Hurricane Sky six-year-old having won over 2100m at the track carrying 59kg on November 10 – they drop back to the 54kg minimum on Saturday.
Starlight Lady is after her third consecutive victory the Fantastic Light mare last seen running away to win a Benchmark 74 over 2100m at Ascot on October 20.
Parnham meanwhile will also be represented in the race by his Pentire six-year-old Bridgestone in gate two out to improve on their seventh in the Ascot Gold Cup.
