They may have had no luck in the WA Guineas 2012 barrier draw but Trevor Andrews’ progressive three-year-old Luke’s Luck has retained their favouritism, albeit at an easing price, to win the Railway Stakes Day feature at Ascot Racecourse this Saturday.
The Show A Heart colt, after their fourth Group race success, came up with barrier 14 of 18 for Saturday’s $350,000 Group 2 W.A. Guineas (1600m) and will only come in one gate if the two emergencies fail to gain a run.
Still the bookies are taking no chances with the promising galloper for their first look at the mile with Luke’s Luck topping the WA Guineas betting odds at a quote of $2.50.
They certainly have the right form leading into the Guineas having won back-to-back races at the track during the autumn taking out the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate – Group 3 WA Sires Produce Stakes double.
Resuming with a first-up second to Power Princess, where they beat home dual Group 1 winner Playing God (3rd) in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m), Luke’s Luck was last seen finishing a brave third to defending Railway Stakes champ Luckygray in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) on November 10.
For their past two runs Luke’s Luck has drawn the rails and encountered traffic from their inside alley, connections hopeful that even from a double-digit gate they will get a better run this weekend.
Three other WA Guineas hopefuls are also under $10 in the latest markets with:
- #13 Antique Belle ($4) – Draw in barrier one will need to stay out of trouble, Grant Williams’ smart Redoute’s Choice filly has been in top form over her five start career to date which includes a Listed Burgess Queen Stakes win at the start of the month and a third in the Group 3 Champion Stakes over the track and distance last Saturday
- #2 Academus ($4.80) – Ace gate seven draw for this Peter Snowden-trained Sydney raider who will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, the Group 1 placed Lonhro gelding has had two runs this time in with a win at Hawkesbury and a last start fourth in a black type at Flemington when carrying 60kg – drop back to 56.5kg here and will relish that weight
- #4 Rebelson ($8.50) – Should get a gun run from gate four, Darren McAuliffe’s Snippetson gelding has won their last two on the trot when a narrow victor over the mile at Belmont Park last month before scoring a decisive victory in the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) at Ascot on November 10
Other longer-priced contenders in the mix then include the likes of Fairetha Stakes runner-up Dominating ($14), Champion Stakes winner from last weekend Fuddle Dee Duddle ($16) and the Simon Miller-trained Darlington Abbey ($16) with the extreme outside barrier to overcome who has run top four in her past five starts.
