Academus Eyes WA Guineas 2012 Win

Leading Sydney trainer Peter Snowden is excited over the prospect of his smart three-year-old Academus who is ready to make their WA debut against their own kind in the 2012 WA Guineas at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse this Saturday.

Currently featuring a capacity field of 16 starters plus two emergencies, the $350,000 Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) is one of three feature races on Railway Stakes Day.

Academus meanwhile is the only interstate raider in the mile classic, Sydney hoop Kerrin McEvoy travelling over for the ride where the Darley-owned youngster has drawn barrier seven – into six with emergencies out.

The WA Guineas will be Academus’ third run this time in, the consistent galloper searching for just their second win at career start number six.

After a strong winter campaign in Brisbane that produced three minor placings including their third to Sizzling in the Group 1 TJ Smith over the 1600m at Eagle Farm, Academus resumed with a big first-up win at Hawkesbury on October 18.

They were last seen running fourth to Eximius in the Listed Hilton Hotels Stakes (1400m), a performance that Snowden hopes they can improve on this weekend in the Guineas.

“It looks a nice race for him,” Snowden said.

“I know nothing about the form of his opposition but under the set weights he looks well in.”

Snowden reported that Academus and stablemate Pinwheel who travelled over for the $500,000 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) had both made the trip without issue and would have their first hit-out at Ascot on Tuesday morning.

“From all reports both horses have settled in well, I’m heading over to Perth tomorrow morning and they’ll work on Tuesday,” Snowden said on Sunday.
