Ibicenco Wins 2012 Sandown Cup – Race 3 Results

Ibicenco has won the Listed Sandown Cup at Sandown Racecourse today November 17, 2012.

The four-year-old won the $150,000 race with ease ahead of Reuben Percival, who finished second, and Unusual Suspect, who passed the post in third.

It was the first win for Ibecenco in Australia, who has failed to finish better than fourth in his last three race starts.

The Shirocco entire finished fourth in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes last start and was nominated for the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup, however, failed to make the field.

Today’s 2012 Sandown Cup win came with an added bonus for Ibecenco, who won an extra $100,000 on top of his prize money because of his failed Melbourne Cup bid.

Chris Cogan, who is the stable representative for British trainer Luca Cumani, was there to see Ibicenco salute in the 2012 Sandown Cup.

“We told (jockey) Glen Boss ‘ride your own race’,” Cogan said.

“He got stuck in behind a little bit at Flemington and still only got beat two lengths (last start).”

Cogan also felt his seventh placing in the Moonee valley wasn’t a proper representation of Ibicenco’s abilities.

“When he gets boxed in all around he tends to throw the towel in,” he said.

Managing owner Terry Henderson revealed that Ibicenco will now be sent to trainer Peter Moody to allow him to stay based in Australia.

“He’ll probably get the sack now, Luca (Cumani), because the horse will go to Peter Moody,” Henderson said.

“We’ll give him an easy time now and probably get him ready for the Sydney Cup.

“His career is still ahead of him.”

Jockey Glen Boss had always been confident Ibicenco would win today’s 2012 Sandown Cup.

“I thought I was on the best two mile in the race,” Boss said.

“He cruised up that hill off the bridal just picking them off as he went.

“He give me an okay feel.

“Obviously the blinkers have helped.”
