Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Luca Cumani’s one-time Melbourne Cup hopeful Ibicenco has opened favourite for another two-mile spring showdown, the English raider the top fancy for this Saturday’s 2012 Sandown Cup.
The Shirocco stallion was bought over with two other stablemates as Cumani looked to break through with his maiden victory in the world’s richest handicap.
Five-year-old Ibicenco however failed to make the top 24 horses for the $6.2 million handicap and missed out on a run in the Melbourne Cup.
They have had two runs down under this season when seventh to the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) on October 27 and fourth to subsequent Melbourne Cup fourth place-getter Kelinni in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day two weeks ago.
On Saturday they go up to the 3200-meters, a distance they ran a good second over back home in Britain earlier this year, and are drawn in gate two of 12 in the $150,000 Listed Sandown Cup.
With ace hoop Glen Boss booked for the ride Ibicenco has opened the narrow favourite in the Sandown Cup odds paying $3.50 to win their Cup consolation prize for connections.
Ibicenco is followed closely in the Sandown Cup betting markets then by two other hopefuls with Verdant ($3.60) and the Gerald Ryan-trained Ironstein at $3.80.
Drawn in barrier six with Dwayne Dunn to ride on 54.5kg, Robert Smerdon’s in-form Singspiel six-year-old Verdant is after their third straight win having won over 3000m at Moonee Valley back on October 26 before their runaway Melbourne Cup Day victory in the Lavazza long Black (2800m).
Seven-year-old Zabeel gelding Ironstein meanwhile comes off a distant second having been beaten five lengths by the freakish Puissance De Lune in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) last Saturday.
The final horse under double-figures in the Sandown Cup markets is then the super-consistent Crafty Cruiser ($8.50), Bryce Stanaway’s Torquay galloper drawn nicely in gate four as they look to improve on their fourth to Verdant on Cup Day at the start of the month.
Crafty Cruiser was also beaten by Verdant two back at the Valley when a close second but had their measure the run before when they beat them home by a length over 2438m at Mornington on October 10.
Other notable hopefuls at slightly longer odds then include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Reuben Percival ($10), David Hayes’ imported mare Fictional Account ($15) and Kiwi raider Back In Black ($17).
