Fawkner Out of Railway Stakes Field 2012

Early betting markets for Saturday week’s 2012 Railway Stakes in Perth have undergone a shake-up after leviathan owner Lloyd Williams withdrew his flying Emirates Stakes runner-up Fawkner from the $1 million showdown.

Emirates Stakes runner-up Fawkner will bypass the 2012 Railway Stakes and be prepared for the autumn

One of 45 early entries for the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), the richest race of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival, Reset five-year-old Fawkner was originally installed on the second line of Railway Stakes betting behind the reigning champ Luckygray.

Fawkner burst into Railway Stakes contention after winning their opening three starts this time in at Flemington including the Group 3 TAB.Com.Au Stakes (1400m) on Derby Day before their devastatingly close second when defeated a nose by Happy Trails in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at their pet track last Saturday.

Williams however made the decision this week to abandon plans to head west for the Railway with Fawkner who will instead be spelled and saved for “a nice race in the autumn” next year.

“I looked at him this morning and thought the travel all the way to Perth might be a bit too much for him,” Williams said on Thursday.

“He had a tough run on Saturday and he ran the previous Saturday.

“I thought the three-and-a-half hour flight might be pushing him.

“He has had four starts for three wins and a short-head second, so you can’t ask for much more.”

Even without Fawkner in the mix this year’s Railway Stakes is shaping up as a beauty with the early entries chock full of both local and interstate talent including dual Group winner Luke’s Luck, Grant Williams’ resuming six-year-old Ranger, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Epsom Handicap champ Fat Al, local four-year-old King Saul, multiple Group 1 winner Yosei to be ridden by Michael Rodd and Wall Street.
