Bowman Confident of Lunar Rise in Sandown Guineas 2012

Top Aussie hoop Hugh Bowman has a strong book of rides on Zipping Classic Day at Melbourne’s Sandown Racecourse this Saturday including aboard the Bart Cummings-trained up-and-comer Lunar Rise in the 2012 Sandown Guineas.

Lunar Rise

Lunar Rise has drawn awkwardly with barrier 14 in the 2012 Sandown Guineas this weekend

The smart Starcraft gelding has won three of their eight starts to date, most recently taking out the Group 3 Inglis Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day with Bowman in the saddle.

Bowman was also aboard for Lunar Rise’s fourth to It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick last month and believes they have improvement in them heading into the $350,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) on the weekend despite their awkward barrier 14 (of 16) draw.

“He won really well dropping back to a mile last start and I was pretty impressed with him,” Bowman said.

“He was aided by a strong pace that day and will need a bit of luck on Saturday because he’s drawn a wide barrier.

“But he’s an improving type of horse.”

In the Carbine Club Stakes Lunar Rise was able to beat home the Peter Snowden-trained Tatra by a long neck but in the latest Sandown Guineas betting markets they are the $4.80 second pick behind Tatra ($4.60).

The only other single-figure fancy in the Sandown Guineas odds is then Tatra’s stablemate Proverb ($5.50) who was a length and a half away third in the Carbine last time out, Snowden having enjoyed a strong run in the race recently.

He won in 2008 with Caymans and 2009 with Kidnapped before Chasse ran a brave second to Pressday in 2010 and Galah was beaten by a mere neck by So Swift 12 months ago in a photo finish for the trifecta.

Whether you are backing Lunar Rise to score their second Group win on the trot, are tipping Snowden to continue his good run in the last major race for three-year-olds during the spring, or have a double-figure outsider rated special to win the Sandown Guineas – all the odds you need can be found online at
