Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The top two horses in Saturday’s 16-starter 2012 Sandown Guineas field are currently battling for favouritism in the betting markets with the Peter Snowden-trained Tatra the narrow favourite over Bart Cummings’ last start winner Lunar Rise.
Due to run as Sandown Race 7 at 4:10pm (AEST) this year’s $350,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) is one of the two Group 2 features running at the track for Zipping Classic Day.
Drawn in barrier seven with Kerrin McEvoy to ride, the Hussonet colt Tatra has opened top of the Sandown Guineas odds at a quote of $4.40.
Winner of the Listed Ming Dynasty (1400m) at Warwick Farm earlier this spring the Group 1 minor place-getter was last seen coming within a long neck of Lunar Rise in the Group 3 Inglis Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day when the duo ran two-one.
Carbine Club Stakes winner Lunar Rise may have had Tatra’s measure then but on Saturday it is the latter the bookies have at the top of the markets.
In-form Starcraft gelding Lunar Rise meanwhile is hot on Tatra’s heels paying $4.60 in the latest Sandown Guineas betting markets.
Lunar Rise has been in flying form this season having run third to It’s A Dundeel in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) before their brave fourth to the same horse in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) last month.
Going back down to the mile was a breeze for the boom youngster then as they won the Carbine Club Stakes with Hugh Bowman aboard, Bowman aboard again on Saturday with the duo out wide in barrier 14.
Only one other three-year-old is then at single-figures to upset the favourites with Proverb paying $6.
Snowden’s Commands gelding has only finished worse than fourth once in their eight-start career to date and comes into the race on the back of some impressive form.
They have started four times this spring, including their narrow victory in the Listed Dulcify Quality (1900m) at Rosehill when carrying 58kg back in September, Proverb last seen finishing third in the Carbine Club Stakes.
Other notable Sandown Guineas hopefuls and their current prices then include the Mick Price-trained Eximius ($11) who won the Listed Hilton Hotels Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday, lightly-raced Cranbourne galloper Edgewood ($11), Gold Medals ($11) and Al Aneed ($12) who are all genuine chances with good lead-up form.
