2013 Lightning Stakes Renamed After Black Caviar

The Lightning Stakes has been renamed the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, with the new name due to come into effect from 2013.

The Group 1 Lightning Stakes takes place in February each year at Flemington Racecourse, as part of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

The name change comes after Black Caviar won the $750,000 race on two occassions, with her most recent win occurring earlier this year.

Black Caviar has claimed her Lightning Stakes victories by a combined margin of 5.3 lengths.

The 2013 Lightning Stakes has been renamed after unbeaten sprint champion Black Caviar.

Both of her wins have been in front of talented galloper Hay List, who placed a gallant second on both occasions.

The 2013 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes will take place on Saturday February 16, 2012, giving Black Caviar the opportunity to win the very race that is named after her.

The six-year-old mare has not raced since injuring herself whilst winning the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot Racecourse in June this year, however, is expected to return to the track for one final farewell campaign during the autumn.

The autumn preparation would most likely see Black Caviar have one start in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Black Caviar has won all 22 of her career starts and has earned more than $6.1 million in prize money.
