Boom New Zealand jockey James McDonald will miss 2012 Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington tomorrow after his appeal against a careless riding charge was dismissed.
McDonald was suspended for 14 meetings for his ride aboard Fiorente in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday where stewards deemed he caused interference to a rival mount.
The young hoop was booked for key rides on the final day of the 2012 Melbourne Cup Carnival including aboard Secret Admirer in the Group 1 2012 Emirates Stakes (1600m) and Satin Shoes in the Group 1 2012 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m).
The ride on Group 1-winning mare Secret Admirer has been taken by Brenton Avdulla while Steven Arnold has picked up the ride on Satin Shoes.
Craig Williams will ride Lightinthenite in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) while perhaps the major beneficiary of McDonald’s suspension is Hugh Bowman who assumes the ride on short-priced favourite Silent Achiever in the Group 2 2012 Matriarch Stakes (2000m).
The New Zealand mare is at $1.70 to win the mares’ feature after an outstanding win in her Australian spring opener in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley two weeks ago.
On that occasion she flew home to beat Group 1 winners Rangirangdoo and Solzhenitsyn in what was her first win in Australia.
The Roger James-trained four-year-old had a brief autumn campaign on the back of her New Zealand Derby win and she produced respectable performances with a third-place finish in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas and a sixth in the Australian Derby. Bowman was aboard for both autumn starts.
Only two other horses fall under double figures in the Matriarch Stakes with Lake Sententia ($7.50) chasing a fourth straight win and Midnight Martini ($8) also out to continue strong spring form.
