Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The final day of the 2012 Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington on Saturday is set to see the week of action close with a bang with a classy field contesting the Group 1 2012 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
Lloyd Williams has already had a big week by winning the Melbourne Cup with Green Moon but it could get even bigger if favourite Fawkner ($4.60) salutes on Saturday.
The in-form gelding faces a step up in class though this weekend and heads an open betting market ahead of Group 1 winners Solzhenitsyn ($6) and Fat Al ($7).
There is no shortage of quality in the field and also under double figures are Epsom runner-up Ambidexter ($8), progressive Darley galloper Free Wheeling ($9) and New Zealand five-year-old He’s Remarkable ($9.50).
Those who like to chase a longer priced runner still have plenty to choose from and there are a number of class runners at big odds including Happy Trails ($15), Spirit Song ($15) and Secret Admirer ($17).
Not sure who to back in a field that features so many top class runners? Keep reading as the Races.com.au experts have been hard at work to bring you our very best selections.
#4 Solzhenitsyn $6.00
Classy Queensland galloper who has been set for this race for a long time.
Won the Toorak Handicap two starts back ahead of a quality field and ran into traffic in the Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley before hitting the line strongly to finish third.
Bigger track at Flemington suits for a horse who takes a while to wind up but then charges through the line.
Strong type who carries weight well so the 58kg is not a problem and Corey Brown should be able to position him just behind the speed from barrier two.
#10 Fawkner $4.60
Has been absolutely flying this prep and is chasing a fifth straight win this weekend.
Has won four from five starts over the mile and absolutely loves Flemington with five wins from seven starts at the track.
A rise in class but has been dominant in lower level races and deserves his shot here.
#16 Spirit Song $15
This Aaron Purcell has shown impressive form this spring without winning, having finished in the top three in her four most recent starts.
Gets her best distance here with four of her seven career victories coming over the trip and is one from one at Flemington.
Gets in with a lovely weight of 54.5kg.
