Darci Be Good Wins 2012 Hawkesbury Cup

Kembla Grange gelding Darci Be Good broke a 14-month winning drought when taking out the Group 3 2012 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) on Thursday.

The Bede Murray-trained four-year-old was positioned just behind the leaders and travelled comfortably throughout.

When jockey Kathy O’Hara asked for an effort he duly responded and was too strong in the finish as he beat home Isopach and Pracecido.

O’Hara said the son of Darci Brahama was not the easiest horse to ride but executed a carefully calculated game plan.

“Even though they did go a genuine speed I got moving on him early,” O’Hara said.

“Last start at Randwick he just railed away on the fence and it doesn’t suit him he’s quite strong and he’s tough.

“At Hawkesbury it’s a shorter straight so I sent him forward a bit early but it suits him, the way the race was run it worked out perfectly for him.”

Darci Be Good started in a number of three-year-old Group 1 events in the autumn but was always slightly off the pace with his best result a sixth-place finish in the Randwick Guineas.

Murray nearly didn’t run him in the Hawkesbury feature but listened to the owners which was a move that paid off to the tune of $90,000 in prizemoney.

“I was considering not running him and had another race that I was thinking of for him,” he said.

“But they [owners] told me they wanted to run him so I said okay.”
