Shamal Wind Scores Big Win in Heritage Stakes 2012

Robert Smerdon-trained filly Shamal Wind produced a performance suggesting there will be bigger things to come when recording a convincing win in the Listed 2012 Heritage Stakes (1200m) at Flemington today.

The Dubawi three-year-old was having just the second start of her career but quickly made light work of her more experienced rivals.

Ridden by Mark Zahra, the raw youngster was held just off the pace in the bunched field before showing an electric turn of foot at the 200-metre mark to dash away for a 2 ½ length win ahead of Brave Soul and Isabella Snowflake.

Zahra was riding Shamal Wind for the second time after piloting her to a five-length win on debut at Ballarat late last month.

He described her as “very special” and is predicting a bright future for the talented youngster.

“Very special, you know you are going alright when you haven’t even pressed the button yet and everyone else is off the bit,” Zahra said.

“When I said go gee she put paid to them quick.

“When I put a loop in the reign she put about three on them.”

Zahra rode the filly in two trials before her debut and praised her ability to show her best on race day.

“I think she was a bit crazy early,” he said.

“I did a bit of work on her in the trials. Every trial got better and on race day she really showed her best and she’s just getting better all the time.”

Well-backed favourite Meidung got into clear running but could not go with the top three and finished four lengths off the winner in fourth position.
