Multiple Group 1 winner Ortensia has arrived back in Australia and is enjoying her time in the spelling paddock before resuming work on Monday.
The Paul Messara-trained mare had an outstanding overseas campaign which began back in March with a win in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m) in Dubai and only finished in the UK in September.
She achieved the remarkable feat of scoring Group 1 wins in three different continents when she dashed to victory in the Nunthorpe Stakes (1000m) at York in August.
Messara said the daughter of Testa Rossa came through quarantine in excellent condition and already appears eager to get back into training.
“She’ll finish the rest of this week in the paddock,” Messara said..
“She’s back in [work] on Monday. We’ve only had her back for a week and a half a and a couple of more days and I think she’ll be ready to go.
“She’s standing at the gate wanting to come back in. I’m very happy with the way she looks. We just wanted to let her get her head down for a couple of week.”
Messara said he will be guided by the horse on when she will resume in the autumn but is hopeful she will be ready for the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February.
“She’ll take a couple of months to come up. She’s not a horse that you can rush. We are kind of aiming for the Lightning in February,” he said.
The New South Wales trainer was thrilled with the way she performed overseas and was particularly taken aback by the speed of the races.
“She was running some incredible sectionals,” he said.
Ortensia has a stunning career resume of 13 wins from 35 starts and boasts a prize pool in excess of $2.4 million.
