Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2012 – Final Field and Barriers Released

The major staying race of the year may be over but there are still some quality horses lining up on Saturday in the Group 3 2012 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m).

The 14-horse field features a mixture of experienced horses who just missed out on making the Melbourne Cup field as well as a number of rising hopes who could be in contention for bigger races next year.

Two international raiders who didn’t make the highly competitive Melbourne Cup field have been included with Shahwardi and Lost In The Moment sharing the topweight of 58kg.

French gelding Shahwardi was considered a strong chance to be competitive in the Cup if he were to make the field after winning the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on Australian debut last month.

Lost In The Moment ran sixth in last year’s Melbourne Cup and so far this year has placed in both the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at York and the Listed Rose Bowl at Newmarket.

Vatuvei is being set for next year’s Melbourne Cup by leading Australian trainer Peter Moody and showed his staying ability late last month when winning the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m).

Veteran stayer Ironstein again missed Melbourne Cup qualification but he can still salvage something from his spring by scoring a second straight Queen Elizabeth Stakes title.

The seven-year-old has been in reasonable form this spring without breaking through, having placed in both the Group 3 JRA Cup and the Moonee Valley Cup.

Others in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes field include Lloyd Williams-owned pair Tanby and Excluded, Bendigo Cup winner Puissance De Lune, 25th on the Melbourne Cup order of entry Moudre and Bart Cummings’ Dare To Dream.
