Melbourne Cup 2012 – Late Mail

Mount Athos has been named as the late mail in the 2012 Melbourne Cup field.

With the race due to run at 3pm (AEDT), the betting markets are  beginning to settle into their final positions.

Mount Athos currently shares the $7 favouritism with Duaden at ahead of his Australian racing debut.

The five-year-old is currently the market mover for the 2012 Melbourne Cup after originally opening at much longer odds.

Despite his heavy favouritism, Aussie trainer Lee Freedman does not believe he can win this year’s Melbourne Cup.

Freedman feels the winning horse will have run their last start in Australia.

“Every horse that I’ve had win the cup has gone in off its personal best (run),” Freedman said.

“So if you are looking for horses who haven’t run here near their personal best coming into the cup, your percentage of finding the winner is very low.

“Very few horses are going into this race off their personal best and there are a heap of unknowns in terms of horses who haven’t run here. The winning formula has been the horses who have come here and run.”

Freedman is backing last year’s winner Dunaden as the 2012 Melbourne Cup winner.

Dunaden, who is also paying $7 to win the race, won his last start in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup at Caulfield Racecourse last month.
