2012 Melbourne Cup Tips for the Patriotic – Best of the Locals

For those who bleed green and gold the Melbourne Cup has been tough too watch in recent years and unfortunately for the patriotic internationals have again come in numbers for the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia is our top local pick for the Melbourne Cup

While 16 of the field are trained locally, just six are genuine locals in that they have raced their entire careers down under.

Maluckyday did the Australian staying cause wonders when running a bold second to Americain in 2010 and he is rated the number one local at $15.

Peter Moody’s Brisbane Cup winner Lights Of Heaven ($18) is the next best local hope while emerging galloper Ethiopia is a staying talent at big odds of $21.

The other local products shooting for Melbourne Cup glory are four-year-old Zabeelionaire ($51), Maluckyday’s stablemate Niwot ($61) and Melbourne Cup legend Bart Cummings’ outside hope Precedence ($101).

So want to back a local this year? Keep reading for the very best local selections from the Races.com.au experts.

Best Local

#19 Ethiopia $21

This four-year-old could well be the answer to Australia’s staying problems.

It’s still unknown how good he is but he was outstanding in the Australian Derby but Pat Carey has not been shy about suggesting he is a genuine stayer.

Won the AJC Derby in the autumn and has handled the step up to open company beautifully this spring with a tough fourth in the Cox Plate showing his readniess for the big one.

Other Local Hopes

#15 Maluckyday $15 and #20 Lights Of Heaven $18

Gritty stayer Maluckyday has been there done it all before with his 2010 runner-up performance and he has showed promising signs in the lead-up this year.

Ran a great second over 2500m in the Bart Cummings last month and despite missing the kick in the Geelong Cup still finished off the race in promising style.

Lights Of Heaven has been Peter Moody’s Melbourne Cup chance since well before the spring and the five-year-old mare showed she is well on her way with a third-place finish in the Caulfield Cup.

Think one of the locals can fly the flag in our biggest race? Fancy an international? It doesn’t matter who you are backing, visit bookmaker.com.au for great odds and to take advantage of their $400 bonus bet offer!
