According to the Timeform ratings, Mount Athos is the most likely winner of today’s 2012 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse.
With his Timeform rating of 123, Mount Athos is in the box seat to provide his trainer, Luca Cumani, with his very first Melbourne Cup winner.
Mount Athos has won seven of his 20 race starts and has earned more than $200,000 in prize money.
The Montjeu gelding has won all three of his race starts this preparation, with his most recent win being in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury Racecourse.
Expert form analysis Gary Crispe is confident that trainer Luca Cumani will finally claim his first Melbourne Cup with this year with Mount Athos.
“Luca Cumani started his quest to win the Cup back in 2006 with Glistening who ran 10th behind Delta Blues,” Crispe said.
“He then trained two close seconds with Purple Moon in 2007 and Bauer in 2008 and more recently Manighar has run seventh in 2010 and fifth last year.
“But this year Cumani has bought a higher-rated horse than all those in Mount Athos who boasts a Timeform rating of 123.
“Mount Athos only joined Cumani’s yard at the start of this year and remains undefeated in three starts taking his Timeform rating from 112 to 123+ with authoritative performances.”
