With the 2012 Melbourne Cup countdown into its final 24 hours, it is crucial to know what conditions will be like as it could have a big impact on the result in Tuesday’s $6 million staying race.
The good news for punters attending the biggest race day on the calendar is if there is rain it is expected to be only patchy and is likely to clear by the afternoon.
It’s also good news for the punters who have leapt in to backing either of Luca Cumani’s contenders, with both Mount Athos and My Quest For Peace ($17) likely to relish the expected good surface.
“Both my horses like fast ground,” Cumani said.
Mount Athos has attracted plenty of early money and now occupies the second line of betting at $7.50 with Dunaden and behind favourite Americain ($6).
Mount Athos will be running in Australia for the first time and brings with him three straight wins in the UK while My Quest For Peace is likely to benefit from his fifth-place Caulfield Cup performance.
Galileo’s Choice ($16) has also been the recipient of attention from punters but connections are hoping the patchy rain will develop into something more for him to show his best.
Trainer Dermot Weld’s son Mark said at the Melbourne Cup barrier draw that the Good 3 witnessed on Derby day is likely to be too quick for the talented Irish stayer.
“A couple of hours rain on Tuesday would be a big help,” he said.
“It is critical because I think the track was upgraded to a good 3 this afternoon and that is too quick for us.”
Also likely to appreciate some give in the ground is Americain who will be wearing glue on shoes.
