Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
On the eve of the 2012 Melbourne Cup, the market for Australia’s biggest race is dominated by international horses.
French stayer Americain, who won the $6 million staying test in 2010, remains favourite to join the elite group of horses to have won the Melbourne Cup twice.
The veteran is being offered at $6.50 at bookmaker.com.au, easing slightly after opening at $5 following the barrier draw on Saturday.
Drawn well in barrier 12, the son of Dynaformer announced that he would again be a top contender when running home strongly for fourth in the Caulfield Cup.
Closest to Americain in the betting is fellow French Cup winner Dunaden who is also looking to join the elite of the elite by scoring back-to-back Melbourne Cups.
Currently rated a $7.50 chance, the Nicobar entire is, on the basis of his stunning Caulfield Cup win, a better horse than the one that beat Red Cadeaux to top honours last year.
The new runner at the top end of the market is the Luca Cumani-trained Mount Athos ($8).
There is plenty of hype about this gelding who won his three most recent starts prior to arriving and gets in well at the weights with 54kg.
The only other runner under double figures is Red Cadeaux ($9) who will be out to avenge last year’s defeat when he was beaten in a photo by Dunaden.
Carrying 55.5k the Ed Dunlop-trained stayer beats his rival far better at the weights this year but many experts have questioned whether he has made the neccessary improvement to knock off the French star.
The first Australian-trained runner in the market is 2010 runner-up Maluckyday who is being offered at $13.
The team Hawkes-trained gelding is considered one of the best local hopes along with Ethiopia ($21) and Lights Of Heaven ($17).
Other notable horses in the Melbourne Cup market include Irish stayer Galileo’s Choice ($16), Luca Cumani’s second runner My Quest For Peace ($17) and Lloyd Williams-owned pair Green Moon ($16) and Mourayan ($26).
