The official 2012 Melbourne Cup final field and barrier draw has now been released and bookmakers around the country have updated their Melbourne Cup betting odds – Americain the firming favourite.
Due to run as Flemington Race 7 on Tuesday November 6, the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) boasts one of the most in-depth and impressive fields in the race’s 152-year history.
After the Melbourne Cup barrier draw on Derby Day it is former Melbourne Cup champ Americain who won the classic back in 2010 that is sitting top of the Melbourne Cup odds at $5, in from the $6 they were paying pre-field.
The Alain de Royer Dupre-trained French galloper jumped from barrier 11 back in 2010 to become the seventh Melbourne Cup winner to jump from the gate since barriers were introduced back in 1924.
This year they have drawn one wide with barrier 12 and connections are thrilled with their starting position.
“Great barrier draw we’re very happy,” Americain’s Australian part-owner Gerry Ryan said.
“The horse is in great condition, Stephanie’s the most relaxed I’ve seen her because she knows the horse is right to go.
“We’re going to be very competitive
“The horse can run in any condition, he proved that at Caulfield so let’s give it our best shot.
“This year’s field is the best he’s ever run in, we need to have every one percent up our sleeves as the one percents make 100 percent
“The depth (of the field) is fantastic.
“We might be favourite with the bookie but there’s a lot of competition and hopefully we’ve got the best horse on the day.”
Second favourite in the Melbourne Cup betting markets at bookmaker.com.au is then the defending champ Dunaden at $7, the same price they were quoted at before the final field announcement.
Due to be ridden by Craig Williams, who missed the winning Melbourne Cup ride 12 months ago due to suspension, Dunaden has drawn barrier 16 for their title defense, three wider than the ‘unlucky’ barrier 13 draw they had last year.
Just one other horse is at single-figures in the Melbourne Cup betting odds with Mount Athos paying $8 to win their down under debut and hand trainer Luca Cumani with his maiden ‘Loving Trophy’.
The next best fancied in the Melbourne Cup 2012 odds are then:
- #4 Red Cadeaux ($10) – May have drawn the one barrier that is yet to produce a Melbourne Cup winner (18) but is still well liked to go one better than their devastatingly close second last year
- #15 Maluckyday ($13) – Best fancied of the Aussie-trained hopefuls, ran second to Americian back in 2010 from barrier five, gets in with 53.5kg here with gate nine which should give them options but keep them out trouble
- #14 Green Moon ($15) – Turnbull Stakes winner came in from $18 to $15 after coming up trumps with barrier five for their Cup bid, but will a good gate be enough for them to regain form after they failed in the Cox Plate from the same barrier? Money coming in after Brett Prebble was confirmed as the jockey – coming over from Hong Kong
Other stayers under $20 in the latest Melbourne Cup markets are then the Dermot Weld-trained Galileo’s Choice ($17) who drew the most successful barrier of the modern era (11) which has produced seven Melbourne Cup winners including Americain two years ago, and Cox Plate fourth place-getter Ethiopia ($19) in gate 14 which three of the past 12 Melbourne Cup winners have drawn.
