Mackinnon Stakes 2012 Runners Chase Melbourne Cup Ballot Exemption

The Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes is set to run at Flemington Racecourse today November 3, 2012.

With the winner gaining automatic entry into the 2012 Melbourne Cup, all eight Mackinnon Stakes runners will be gunning for victory.

While race favourite Ocean Park has not been aimed at the 2012 Melbourne Cup, the likes of Back In Black and Prairie Star will need to win today’s race to guarantee them a run.

Back In Black is currently 45th in the order of entry for the $6 million Melbourne Cup and will need to win the 2012 Mackinnon Stakes if he has any chance of making the 24 horse final field.

The seven-year-old gelding finished fourth in the Group 3 Geelong Cup at Geelong Racecourse last start, in what was his first Australian run.

The Storm Creek gelding has won nine of his 61 race starts and has earned more than $200,000 in prize money during his career.

Prairie Star is presently 28th in the order of entry for the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

While he still may make the field without winning the 2012 Mackinnon Stakes today, a win would guarantee him of a run.

The four-year-old has had just one race start in Australia since arriving from France earlier this spring, when finishing fourth in the Group 3 David Jones Cup at Caulfield.
