The best three-year-old sprinters in Australia line up at Flemington on Saturday to compete for Group 1 glory and a share in $500,000 in the Group 1 2012 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
The punters have come for Patinack’s boom filly Nechita since an impressive jump-out down the straight on Tuesday and she is current favourite at $3.60.
Spring star Snitzerland is stalking her in the betting at $3.80 with Queensland colt Sizzling the only other horse close at $4.40.
But there are still some big dangers at big prices, with Sydney travellers Jolie Bay and Knight Exemplar being offered at $8.00 and $9.00 respectively and Blue Sapphire placegetters Fire Thunderbolt ($10.00) and Lankan Rupee ($15.00) both at double figures.
Don’t know who to back in what is set to be a highly competitive affair? Keep reading as the Races.com.au team have done the hard work for you to bring you our very best selections.
#9 Snitzerland $3.80
Plenty of critics have been quick to pot this star filly on the back of her gutsy win in the Blue Sapphire suggesting she may have had enough. But the fact is she won that race and more importantly she won in a way she hadn’t before, rallying late to show she is a tough racehorse.
She’s been one of the standout performers of the spring and this Group 1 race has been the target from top trainer Gerald Ryan since before the spring.
She’s proven down the straight for two wins and second from three attempts and she’s already shown she is a genuine winner. Six wins from nine starts and unbeaten this spring makes her very tough to knock.
#1 Sizzling $4.40
Hugely talented colt from Queensland and we have already seen the winter carnival form stand up this spring.
Kelso Wood has set the horse for this race and he showed plenty of promise first-up when storming home to finish half a length off Snitzerland when fourth in the Blue Sapphire.
Chris Munce flies down from Queensland to assume the ride on a colt he rates highly and natural improvement from the first-up run should have him right in the mix here.
Won five of nine starts and has two minor placings. Outstanding strike rate.
#3 Fire Thunderbolt $10.00
This Adelaide gelding has barely put a foot wrong in his three career starts to date. Was dominant when winning his first two career starts in Adelaide in February and March and picked up where he left off in the Blue Sapphire.
The Phillip Stokes-trained gelding went within a neck of upsetting Snitzerland and he simply needs to bring that form to Flemington to be among the contenders on Saturday.
