Chatham Stakes 2012 – Preview and Tips

It is a somewhat forgotten race on Saturday’s bumper 2012 Victoria Derby Day card but the Group 3 2012 Chatham Stakes (1400m) boasts a decent field that is set to be very competitive.

The Lloyd Williams-owned Fawkner currently heads the market of the race otherwise known as the 2012 Stakes at $2.80 after impressive spring form to date with Darley galloper Free Wheeling the next best at $3.50.

Outside the top pair there is a large gap in the betting market with Instinction and McClintock both being offered at $8.00.

Others in the market include the consistent Dusty Star ($13.00), Group 1 winner Mid Summer Music ($13.00) and Queensland gelding Bold Glance.

The Winner

#5 Free Wheeling $3.50

This Darley-owned entire has shown throughout the early stages of his career that he is a talented racehorse.

Unfortunately he will be off to join Godolphin in Dubai after the spring but while he is here he is set to make an impact.

The four-year-old was strong during the Queensland winter which included a runner-up in the Queensland Guineas and he opened his spring campaign with a two-length win in the Listed Heading Out Hair and Beauty Stakes.

Has won at the distance before and gets in nicely with 54.5kg, just 0.5kg more than the minimum.

#6 Instinction $8.00

This Mick Price-trained entire has always signalled potential and he fired last start with the addition of winkers to win the Weekend Husller Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths over 1400m.

Gets that distance again here which is a trip he has now won twice at and looks well placed in this company. Has shown he is suited to Flemington with a win and a minor placing from four starts at the track.

#7 Dusty Star $13.00

Really consistent gelding who just seems to be able to pull out solid performances every time he goes to the track.

Has only won four times from 26 starts but has placed on 14 occasions making him a great chance for the minors here.

Was second to Instiction over 1400 metres in the Weekend Hussler Stakes last start.
