2012 Wakeful Stakes Betting Tips & Preview

While the more notable three-year-olds race at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday will be the Victoria Derby there is also plenty of young talent in the fillies-only Wakeful Stakes 2012, betting tips and selections from the Races.com.au team for which are detailed below.

Dear Demi

Dear Demi is the Races.com.au tip to win the 2012 Wakeful Stakes

Set to start at 12:40pm (AEST) as Victoria Derby Day Race 3, the $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) has drawn a talented line-up of 12 fillies – the bulk of which are heading towards Thursday’s Crown Oaks 2012.

The same horses are dominating both the Wakeful Stakes and Crown Oaks odds with Zydeco ($2.70) and Dear Demi ($3.10) battling for favourtism in this weekend’s lead-up.

Confidence is certainly high in camp Zydeco with the Zabeel filly having run third in the Thousand Guineas last-start, jockey Kerrin McEvoy replacing Michael Rodd in the Wakeful.

“She has always felt like 2000 metres and beyond would be where she will excel,” McEvoy said after partnering with her in a strong piece of work at Mornington on Tuesday morning.

“I think getting to Flemington will help her as well and [Freedman] expects her to run well on Saturday and in the Oaks.”

The Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi also isn’t without her admirers after her Thousand Guineas second while third favourite is Cranbourne galloper Tyanna paying $7 after back-to-back Bendigo wins at her two latest.

So does the Races.com.au’s pick to win the Wakeful come from this top trio? Or do we have a longer priced hopeful such as Zuccotto ($11) whose breeding screams a stayer, or James McDonald’s ride Kate ($21) tipped for an upset?

Wakeful Stakes Trifecta Tip

#1 Dear Demi ($3.10) from #7 Tyanna ($7) and #4 Zydeco ($7)

  • Dear Demi worked hard to come from the back of the field and run a good second in the Thousand Guineas over the mile last time out and will relish getting up to the 2000m here. Has a consistent Win / Place rate and was also a game third two back in the Flight Stakes. Group 1 winner in the making with plenty of experience at the highest level already – see Champagne Stakes second to Pierro.
  • Tyanna is stepping right up in class after two wins at Bendigo, but she looks the type to handle that, her pedigree is lovely (although maybe not that of a genuine staying type), and she will love barrier four after her gate 11 of 11 draw last start. Flemington should also suit.
  • Zydeco is the favourite for a reason but she does have work to do from gate 10. She’ll get the distance no worries with her third in the Guineas equally as impressive as Dear Demi’s second but she could be one run off her best – hint hint for the Crown Oaks’ punters.

Roughie Wakeful Stakes Betting Pick

#5 Transonic ($21)

  • Transonic needs a little luck from her wide barrier 12 of 12 draw but if she gets a run could add value to the winning Wakeful Stakes trifecta by sneaking into the top three. Has had 11 starts to date so is familiar with what to do and she’s just getting it right now with her two career runs coming within her last three starts. Also liked her third to Alzora in the Ethereal Stakes over this distance at Caulfield last start from double-digits. Over the odds for sure.
