2012 Lexus Stakes Tips & Betting Selections

With a Melbourne Cup start possible for the winner, the Lexus Stakes 2012 is certainly going to be a hotly contested affair at Flemington this Victoria Derby Day, but for those of you struggling to make your selections on the handicap clash below are our insider Lexus Stakes tips.

Gatewood

Gatewood is the Races.com.au tip to win the 2012 Lexus Stakes this Saturday

The first big event on the Derby Day card, this year’s $250,000 Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) is due to run as Flemington Race 2 at 12:00pm (AEST) and has drawn a final field of 13 stayers.

Lexus Stakes betting at bookmaker.com.au is led by John Gosden’s in-form English raider Gatewood ($3) who has one last chance of making the trip down under worth connections’ while with a Melbourne Cup run by winning this weekend.

Coming off a Geelong Cup victory and drawn in gate three for the Lexus there’s certainly a lot to like about them, but are they the Races.com.au Lexus Stakes tip to win?

There’s plenty of other talent in the mix with the likes of Robert Hickmott’s Herbert Power Stakes runner-up Excluded ($6), the Bart Cummings-trained import Dare To Dream ($6.50) and Geelong Cup failure out to bounce back Exceptionally ($7.50) all boasting genuine claims.

Having gone over the Lexus Stakes 2012 field and form guide below the Races.com.au crew has our exclusive tips and selections on the race to have you cleaning out the bookies this spring.

Lexus Stakes Trifecta Tip

#1 Gatewood ($3) from #2 Tanby ($11) and #6 Excluded ($6)

  • Gatewood really is the class horse in this field. The form of the internationals has been stacking up well and they showed their true colours with a well-earned Geelong Cup win last time out. Distance is right, they were second over the 2500m in a Group 2 in France earlier this year, should have come on since the Cup, Glen Boss stays on and they will get a gun run from gate three. Hard to beat – wouldn’t want to meet.
  • Tanby was in great form last spring (Herbert Power 2nd, Geelong Cup 2nd, Bendigo Cup win) and this time in they are racing just as well having won the Listed Bart Cummings over this track & distance at the start of October. Need to race well fresh (which they don’t always do) on a month break but sure to have been kept ticking over.
  • Excluded is another Hickmott-trained hopefuls in good form, come off a second to exciting French raider Shahwardi (who could miss out on the Melbourne Cup this year) in the Herbert Power which was a nice run, Craig Williams stays on, will relish the 2500m at Flemington having run a very competitive second on Melbourne Cup Day over 2800m last year.

Roughie Lexus Stakes Betting Pick

#9 Dame Claire ($31)

  • Dame Claire has had a bit of early money come in for them and the form says that might not be a crazy bet. The Danehill Dancer mare was a Mornington winner three back carrying 58kg (get 55kg here), before running a good third to Tanby in the Bart Cummings and then a fifth beaten under two lengths in the David Jones Cup at Caulfield.

Whatever horses you have picked out to win the Lexus this weekend and next Tuesday’s $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), you’ll get the hottest Flemington racing odds online at bookmaker.com.au.
