It is hard to split the top twp in the market for the Group 3 2012 Chatham Stakes (1400m) at Flemington this Saturday with Fawkner ($2.80) slightly ahead of Free Wheeling ($3.50).
Otherwise known as the 2012 Tab.com.au Stakes, the $250,000 event is the last on the day as part of the bumper Derby Day card.
The top two in betting have been in impressive form this spring, with the Lloyd Williams-owned Fawkner chasing a third straight win this weekend.
The five-year-old dominated the Listed Sofitel Stakes by four lengths first-up before again saluting in the Listed Tavern Stakes.
Free Wheeling will soon be off to join Godolphin in Dubai but he showed he is here to make an impact before he departs with a two-length first-up win in the Listed Heading Out Hair And Beauty Stakes.
The pair have a strangehold on the Chatham Stakes market, with the next best Instinction and McClintock along way back at $8.00.
Instinction is coming off a 1 1/2 length win in the Weekend Hussler Stakes while McClintock placed in both the Testa Rossa Stakes and the Moonga Stakes.
Eight-year-old McClintock is not the only experienced horse with a chance this Saturday, with Group 1 winner Mid Summer Music ($13.00) and Queensland gelding Bold Glance ($17.00) both up to this on their day.
Mid Summer Music was a surprise winner of the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap during the Queensland winter but has so far been unable to finish better than seventh in two spring starts.
Bold Glance is a former Group 1 placegetter in the Doncaster Mile but faces a step up from his recent races where he has been performing consistently in Brisbane.
