A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Darren Weir-trained import Puissance De Lune continued his excellent form since arriving in Australia today, storming home for an eight-length win in the $250,000 2012 Bendigo Cup (2400m).
With star jockey Glen Boss aboard, the Irish-bred entire jumped keenly before being held just off the lead as Fiumicino set a reasonable tempo up front.
The positions of all the horses in the field remained virtually unchanged until the home turn when Boss asked for an effort from his grey mount and he bolted clear to score a dominant win in front of a big crowd at Bendigo Racecourse.
Weir said owner Gerry Ryan had a long range plan to target the Bendigo Cup but there may be more success to come this spring with a start in Saturday week’s 2012 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington now a strong possibility.
“It’s a great result. It’s good for Gerry too. He asked me to get the horse set for the Bendigo Cup,” Weir said.
Boss went in with a clear plan to ride the son of Shamardal positively and it paid dividends as no horse was able to go with him when he was unleashed approaching the final corner.
“I was always going to ride him that way. I just thought he was a horse that was a highly talented racehorse,” Boss said.
“As soon as I clicked him up he came straight up on the bridle.
“I thought it’s all over now. He did no work and it was going to take a pretty decent horse [to beat him] as he sprinted home pretty quick.”
The Lloyd Williams-owned Practiced finished eight lengths back in second with veteran gelding Fiumicino just behind in third.
Puissance De Lune has now won four of seven starts since arriving in Australia with today’s win by far the biggest of his career.
