Classy 2012 Myer Classic Field & Barriers Released

A quality collection of fillies and mares have been accepted for the Myer Classic 2012 at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday for Victoria Derby Day including five previous Group 1 winners.

Streama

Streama is one of four Group 1 winners in the 2012 Myer Classic field for Saturday

Due to jump as Flemington Race 7 at 3:45pm (AEST) the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) has this year drawn a final field of 13 hopefuls, the Guy Walter-trained Streama topping the ratings.

Drawn in gate nine with Hugh Bowman to ride the Stratum four-year-old, winner of the Flight Stakes – Australian Oaks double last season, comes off a third-up win in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) where she beat a similar field of rivals on Caulfield Cup Day two weeks ago.

Tristarc Stakes runner-up Pear Tart and third placed Red Tracer have also both been accepted to back up in the 2012 Myer Classic field this weekend drawn in gates eight and six respectively.

Along with Streama, the John Thompson-trained Pear Tart is one of the three other mares in the mix with a Group 1 win to their name thanks to her winter win in Brisbane’s Tattersall’s Tiara – Saturday her first look at the mile.

The other Group 1 winners are then last year’s Epsom Handicap champ Secret Admirer to be ridden by James McDonald from barrier two as she looks to improve on her last start 11th in the Caulfield Cup coming back to the 1600m (from 2400m), and Stuart Webb’s triple elite level winner Yosei on the rails with Glen Boss to ride the last start Toorak Handicap third placegetter.

Also in the mix are then two horses prepared by Peter Snowden with Raspberries and Shannara drawn in seven and three respectively.

Snowden describes this year’s Myer Classic field as “very even” and believes Lonhro five-year-old Raspberries is the better of his two chances in the showdown, the Scone Cup winner to bounce back after her Tristarc Stakes 11th.

Whether he will be happy with her mid-field gate is another thing however.

“She will probably need to draw well though,” Snowden said of Raspberries on Tuesday.

“She needs a soft run to produce her best and she didn’t get that at Caulfield (in the Tristarc).”
