2012 Wakeful Stakes Field & Barriers Released

Victoria Derby Day final fields are now out including those for the meeting’s Crown Oaks lead-up, the Wakeful Stakes 2012 attracting 12 acceptors.

Dear Demi

Crown Oaks-bound Dear Demi is one of the top chances in Saturday's Wakeful Stakes 2012

The top-rated filly in the $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) this year is Clarry Conners’ last start Thousand Guineas runner-up Dear Demi who has drawn barrier 7 for Saturday with Hall of Fame jockey Jim Cassidy retaining the ride.

Cassidy was aboard Dear Demi for her brave Guineas effort, the filly having jumped from the extreme outside gate 16 of 16.

Stepping up to the 2000m for the first time Dear Demi is set to back up five days later after the Wakeful in the $1 million Group 1 VRC Crown Oaks (2500m) which is on the agenda for most of the Wakeful hopefuls.

In the latest Crown Oaks odds at bookmaker.com.au Dear Demi is the $4.40 second favourite.

She trails only Zydeco ($3) who is also in the Wakeful Stakes field this weekend, Anthony Freedman’s Zabeel filly having run third in the Thousand Guineas last time out.

The only other Crown Oaks hope under $10 in the current markets is then the lightly-raced Michael Kent-trained Summerbliss ($4.80) who, as expected, was not accepted for the Wakeful going into the Group 1 on Thursday week fresh.

Other notable Crown Oaks 2012-bound fillies that have been accepted for the Crown Oaks meanwhile include the Guy Walter-trained Quest For Fame filly Zuccotto who is nicely bred but yet to race in black type company, Matthew Hyland’s up-and-comer Ten Black out to improve on her last start ninth to Alzora in the Ethereal Stakes on Caulfield Cup Day and Tyanna who comes off back-to-back wins at Bendigo.

Meanwhile one of outside chances in the Wakeful Stakes field 2012 is the John Thompson-trained Transonic.

While Thompson is confident his Tattersall’s Tiara winner Pear Tart is well placed in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Saturday, Transonic still needs to convince him she is up to her Derby Day challenger.

“She is a horse that is going to get better with age and at the moment she’s probably just a level below the top ones,” he said.

Drawn in gate 12 of 12 the daughter of Casino Prince has been in good running top three in her past seven starts including her last-start third in the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) where she also drew double digits.

The full 2012 Wakeful Stakes field, barriers, jockeys and weights are detailed in the table below.
