2012 Victoria Derby Barrier Draw – It’s A Dundeel in 10

Easing Victoria Derby 2012 favourite It’s A Dundeel has drawn double-digits with gate 10 in the capacity 16-horse field for the three-year-olds’ classic at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday.

Murray Baker’s High Chaparral colt won their opening five career starts before going down in a boil-over result in the Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase (2040m) on Cox Plate Day last weekend.

It's A Dundeel

Easing favourite It's A Dundeel has drawn barrier 10 of 16 for the Victoria Derby 2012

Now the New Zealander will look to bounce back and secure their second Group 1 victory, adding to their upset Spring Champion Stakes success in Sydney two back, when they contest the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m).

The 2012 Victoria Derby will be the first time the young gun has jumped from wider than barrier five since their win on debut from gate 12 of 12 back home in NZ at Ellerslie in April.

Second favourite in the Victoria Derby pre-barrier markets, Mark Kavanagh’s Mitchelton Wines Vase victor Super Cool has drawn one outside of It’s A Dundeel for their Derby rematch with gate 11.

Other top fancies with awkward barriers to overcome include Geelong Classic runner-up Malabar Man (15), third placed Escado (12) and fourth placegetter Our Desert Warrior (13).

Meanwhile a number of up-and-coming gallopers enjoyed better luck in the Victoria Derby 2012 barrier draw including the David Payne-trained Norman Robinson Stakes runner-up Honorius (2), Norman Robinson winner Hvasstan (9) to be ridden by Glen Boss, and surprise acceptor Fiveandahalfstar (5).
