Highly-rated Patinack filly Nechita has shown she is in good condition ahead of her first Melbourne test in the Group 1 2012 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington this Saturday.
The Fastnet Rock youngster won a jump-out down the famous Flemington straight this morning, beating home her three rivals over 800 metres in a time of 46.11 seconds.
A winner of two of three starts, the three-year-old did not over exert herself in her last piece of serious work ahead of Saturday’s $500,000 three-year-old feature.
Trainer John Thompson said the exciting filly “had done everything right” since arriving in Melbourne and is looking forward to seeing her return to the track this weekend.
Nechita arrived on the scene with plenty of hype following a 3 1/2 length victory on debut in June and then won the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes in dominant style in August.
After going into the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m), the three-year-old failed to show the same spark she did in the Silver Shadow, beaten 3 1/2 lengths in sixth position.
But it may not have been just the step up in distance and class that caused the failure, with the emerging filly requiring stitches after being stepped on during the race.
“She had four stitches in a leg, it was a pretty deep wound,” Thompson said.
“But she just had to have treatment for a week so we gave her 10 days in the paddock.”
Thompson is confident she can bounce back this weekend in what is set to be a hotly contested race.
Star filly Snitzerland is likely to start as favourite after recording four straight victories so far this spring but there are a number of other contenders including Queensland colt Sizzling, Blue Sapphire place-getters Fire Thunderbolt and Lankan Rupee and Sydney filly Jolie Bay.
