Peter Gelagotis’ flying Fastnet Rock colt Hvasstan is likely to move into second favourtism for the Victoria Derby 2012 this Saturday following the withdrawal of Geelong Classic winner Solemn and jockey Glen Boss is bullish about their chances of beating the favourite It’s A Dundeel.
Hvasstan has been in excellent form this time in progressing rapidly through the ranks as they go up in distance each start.
After winning a 1700m handicap at Caulfield at start number four last month they made their black type debut at Flemington on October 6 and overcame barrier 13 of 16 to run a brave second to Philippi in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m).
They posted their third career victory at start number six last time out when they returned to Caulfield on Caulfield Cup Day and held on in a tight finish to beat home Honorius by a short half-head in the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m).
Their price in set to firm today however after Peter Snowden’s Geelong Classic winner Solemn, previous $6 second favourite, was found to be suffering from a temperature and was to be sent to the paddock.
Victoria Derby odds are still led by It’s A Dundeel, at $2.80 before the Solemn scratching, Murray Baker’s Spring Champion Stakes winner having suffered their first loss last Saturday when they failed to run down Super Cool in the Moonee Valley Vase.
For their past three runs Hvasstan has been ridden by ace hoop Boss who, fresh off the Cox Plate victory with Ocean Park, is confident he can bag another Group 1 win this weekend in the Derby.
The defeat of It’s A Dundeel in the Vase on Cox Plate Day lifted Boss’ hopes of securing his second Victoria Derby trophy even further and believes his mount has what it takes to defeat the favourite.
“It threw the race wide open with that other colt (It’s A Dundeel) getting beat,” Boss, who rode 2000 Victoria Derby winner Hit The Roof to victory, said.
“I have a very good ride in the Derby and I’m really excited about riding this horse.
“Hvasstan is a magnificent Fastnet Rock colt and he’s learning his trade in the last month very quickly.
“He’s another one (like Ocean Park). It’s all about business with this colt. He just keeps turning up and doing his job. He will run very well in the Derby.”
