The 2012 Melbourne Cup Carnival is nearly upon us and one of the most anticipated events each year is the Group 1 2012 Crown Oaks (2500m) which will take place at Flemington next Thursday.
Also known as the 2012 VRC Oaks, the $1 million event features some of the best three-year-old fillies in the land and currently at the top of the betting market is Zydeco from the Anthony Freedman stable.
By Zabeel, the exciting filly is bred to stay and is a $3.00 favourite at bookmaker.com.au ahead of the consistent Dear Demi ($4.40).
Zydeco has shown promise from four career starts to date and ran home strongly to finish third in the Thousand Guineas.
Dear Demi is far more experienced but trainer Clarry Connors said at the beginning of the spring she was always being set the Oaks.
It has been a long preparation for the Dehere filly, beginning back in August with a third-place finish in the Silver Shadow Stakes.
She has since won the Furious Stakes, finished fourth in the Tea Rose Stakes, third in the Flight Stakes and second in the Thousand Guineas.
New stars often emerge in the Oaks and one of those could be the Michael Kent-trained Summer Bliss ($4.80).
The daughter of Danehill Dancer is third favourite in the Oaks betting market after a terrific run when second to Alzora in the Listed Etheral Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield earlier this month.
Outside of the top three there is a large gap in the market with Alzora the next best at $13.00.
Others towards the top end of the Oaks market include Zuccotto ($14.00), Ten Black ($17.00), Tyanna ($17.00) and New Zealand filly Kate ($21.00).
