Crown Oaks Fancies Head 2012 Wakeful Stakes Nominations

This Saturday as part of the top racing action at Flemington’s Victoria Derby Day a field full of Crown Oaks-bound mares will face off in the Wakeful Stakes 2012.

The traditional lead-up to the $1 million Group 1 VRC Crown Oaks (2500m) back at the track on Thursday November 8, the $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) has this year drawn 21 three-year-old fillies at nomination stage.

The fillies that occupy the first 16 lines of 2012 Crown Oaks betting at bookmaker.com.au are all nominated for the Wakeful this weekend including the current $3.30 favourite Zydeco.

Dear Demi

Crown Oaks bound Dear Demi is one of the top 2012 Wakeful Stakes nominees

Anthony Freedman’s Zabeel mare has had four starts to date, including just one win at Bendigo second-up in September, and was last seen running third behind Commanding Jewel in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Summerbliss is then the $4.20 second pick in the latest Crown Oaks odds but she is an unlikely acceptor for Saturday instead going straight into the Crown Oaks later during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The other short-priced chances in the Crown Oaks markets that feature in the Wakeful Stakes early entries then include:

  • Dear Demi ($5) – Clarry Conners’ consistent Dehere filly has run two Group 1 placings this time in when third in the Flight Stakes and second in the Thousand Guineas
  • Zuccotto ($12) – Guy Walter-trained Quest For Fame filly yet to race in black type company but is bred to stay also being out of a Zabeel mare La Zabaglione
  • Alzora ($13) – Redoute’s Choice filly won the Listed Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield last start over 2000m, one of the few to race further than a mile already

Also in the mix are other Crown Oaks hopefuls including Freedman’s Group 2 Fillies Classic winner Kazanluk ($16), Ten Black ($17), Tyanna ($18) and Kate ($21).

The 2012 Wakeful Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be released on Wednesday and published right here at Races.com.au.
