Cox Plate Day 2012 – Race Tips

The 2012 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival hosts one of its biggest days today at Moonee Valley, with the 2012 Cox Plate Day set to be one of the most exciting in recent years.

Of course the biggest race on the card is the $3 million 2012 Cox Plate which features a standout field of genuine stars but there are eight other quality races which is set to ensure an action-packed day of racing.

Apart from the main event other card highlights include the Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vise (2040m) which features the 2012 Victoria Derby favourite It’s A Dundeel, the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m), the Group 2 Crystal Mile and the Group 3 Tesio Stakes.

Unsure who to back in any race on the Cox Plate card? Don’t worry, are here to help with our 2012 Cox Plate Day tips for every race at Moonee Valley today!

Race 1 – 1:00PM Inglis Banner (1000 METRES)

  • 1st – #4 Crack A Roadie ($3.60)
  • 2nd#13 Pinova ($5.00)
  • 3rd – #12 Fantome Gris ($7.50)

Not one to get too heavily involved in as it’s always tough betting in races where much of the field is unraced but there’s been a bit of hype for Crack A Roadie from the Stephen Theodore stable. Has trialled well twice and has Craig Williams to give him every chance on debut. Money can be a good indicator so it’s wise to follow the market. Pinova is from the in-form Hawkes family stable while Fantome Gris steps out for the first time for Leon Corstens.

Race 2 – 1:35PM City Jeep Handicap (1000 METRES)

  • 1st – #3 Obsidian Dragon ($6.00)
  • 2nd – #1 Kulgrinda ($4.00)
  • 3rd – #8 Bigelow ($9.00)

Adelaide mare Obsidian Dragon is a genuine winner with a strike rate of 38 per cent and she looks ripe to continue her good form here. Third-up after a third-place finish to Snitzem and a win the Apache Cat Classic over the same distance. Kulgrinda can bounce back from a last-start seventh and return to the form that saw her score a one-length win at Caulfield last month.

Race 3 – 2:10PM Drummond Golf Handicap (2040 METRES)

  • 1st – #5 Destiny’s Kiss ($5.50)
  • 2nd – #3 Midnight Martini ($2.00)
  • 3rd – #7 Mourinho ($8.00)

Destiny’s Kiss was beaten four lengths by Midnight Martini int he Cranbourne Cup but is a quality horse and gets in 3.5kg better at the weights here. Won six of his seven previous starts before that and can return to the winner’s circle here. No knock on Midnight Martini who will be right in the mix again and Mourinho will appreciate the step up in distance and has won at the track before.

Race 4 – 2:45PM Telstra PhoneWords Stakes (1200 METRES) (Red Anchor Stakes)

  • 1st – #7 Cavalry Rose ($3.20)
  • 2nd – #1 Chosen Moment ($4.60)
  • 3rd – #5 Stars In The Sky ($10.00)

Cavalry Rose led from start to finish to win the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes on Guineas Day over this distance and if she brings the same form again here she will be tough to beat. Looks the class runner in the field. Chosen Moment has finished top two in his past five starts including twice at Moonee Valley so should be hitting the line while Stars In The Sky won at Moonee Valley last start.

Race 5 – 3:20PM Mitchelton Wines Vase (2040 METRES) (Moonee Valley Vase)

  • 1st – #1 It’s A Dundeel ($1.22)
  • 2nd – #2 Viking Star ($13.00)
  • 3rd – #4 Super Cool ($7.50)

Star colt It’s A Dundeel looks an absolute a special to remain unbeaten here. For the reasons why we think he’ll be too good, check out our comprehensive Moonee Valley Vase tips article.

Race 6 – 3:55PM Drake International Cup (2500 METRES) (Moonee Valley Cup)

  •  1st – #4 Ironstein ($5.50)
  • 2nd – #9 Midas Touch ($3.60)
  • 3rd – #11 Vatuvei ($13.00)

For an extensive rundown of why we think Ironstein can win this and potentially gain a Melbourne Cup berth read our Moonee Valley Cup tippping guide.

Race 7 – 4:30PM Schweppes Crystal Mile (1600 METRES)

  • 1st #2 Solzhenitsyn ($4.00)
  • 2nd – #1 Rangirangdoo ($2.90)
  • 3rd – #7 Silent Achiever ($4.80)

The experts have tipped Solzhenitsyn to handle the rise in weight after winning the Group 1 Toorak Handicap. Read out Crystal Mile Preview and Tips to find out why.

Race 8 – 5:15PM Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040 METRES)

  • 1st – #9 Ocean Park ($6.00)
  • 2nd – #10 More Joyous ($8.50)
  • 3rd – #4 Green Moon ($4.60)

We’ve left the boom three-year-olds out of our Cox Plate selections and think Ocean Park will head back to New Zealand with a Cox Plate to his name. To find out why, read our comprehensive Cox Plate Tips article!

Race 9 – 6:00PM Trojan Hand Tools Stakes (1600 METRES) (Tesio Stakes)

  • 1st – #6 Pretty Pins ($12.00)
  • 2nd – #2 Skyerush ($4.20)
  • 3rd – #1 Spirit Song ($4.00)

Pretty Pins hasn’t won since December but she looks well placed to return to the winner’s circle here. Third-up here, gets in on the minimum (54kg) and has won at the distance. Skyerush brings good Sydney form and placed in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara in the Brisbane winter while Spirit Song has to carry a big weight (59kg) but was outstanding when second in the Toorak Handicap two weeks ago.
