Sea Siren Wins 2012 Manikato Stakes

Exciting John O’Shea-trained mare Sea Siren backed up her outstanding winter form to win the Group 1 2012 Manikato Stakes (1200m) in her first start of the spring at Moonee Valley tonight.

The four-year-old was quick out of the gates before experienced jockey Jim Cassidy elected to sit just off the pace as Satin Shoes and Buffering went hard at each in front.

Short-priced favourite Buffering led into the bend before Cassidy kicked Sea Siren into gear and she showed terrific acceleration to assume the lead and hold off a fast-finishing Mental and We’re Gonna Rock.

O’Shea said he was always confident the daughter of Fastnet Rock had come back well from a winter campaign that included Group 1 wins in the BTC Cup and Doomben 10,000.

“Right from the moment she stepped into the stable we thought she’d made good improvement,” O’Shea said.

“She doesn’t make too many mistakes, it was a really good performance tonight.

“She travelled beautifully and most importantly a great Jimmy Cassidy ride.”

Sea Siren’s outstanding early career record now stands at six wins from nine starts and O’Shea is hoping to test her on the international stage later this year.

“I’d love to take her to Hong Kong. I think it’s the pinnacle of international racing around the world and I think she’ll be very effective,” he said.

Cassidy has ridden Sea Siren in her six most recent starts and gave her a glowing endorsement heading towards the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) down the Flemington straight on November 10.

“She’d run up hill, let alone in a straight line,” Cassidy said.
