Guy Walter is eyeing off a Group 1 prize with his veteran mare Skyerush, the seven-year-old to affirm her 2012 Myer Classic ambitions with a run in the last on Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley this Saturday.
The daughter of Super Jet, winner of the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) at Randwick back on Sydney Cup Day, is one of nine quality mares set to face off in the $150,000 Trojan Hand Tools Stakes (1600m) this year – the race formerly known as the Tesio Stakes.
Drawn in gate six with boom jockey Hugh Bowman aboard Skyerush is one of the top fancies in the Moonee Valley Race 9 betting markets at bookmaker.com.au paying $4.40.
She trails only the in-form Star Of Giselle ($3.30) out for her third win on the trot and surprise Toorak Handicap runner-up Spirit Song ($4.20).
A brave second to Pear Tart in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) in Brisbane during the winter, Skyerush has had two runs this time in running top three in both.
She resumed when second to More Joyous, who runs in Saturday’s $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), in the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill before her third at the same track over 1500m in the Listed Angst Stakes on October 13.
“She’s a seasoned mare and has travelled a lot before. She’s settled in well,” Walter said.
“She’s had the two starts in Sydney and should be pretty right for the mile now. I think she’s well-placed in the race tomorrow.”
While a win third-up in theTesio Stakes would be an excellent result for Walter, it may not be the mare’s grand final.
That could be on Victoria Derby Day next Saturday November 3, a good performance this weekend to see Skyerush back up in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) – an event she ran a credible fourth to Hurtle Myrtle in 12 months ago.
“She’ll probably go into the Myer but we’ll just see how she goes tomorrow first,” Walter said.
“She would need to run well.
“She ran a good race in the Myer last year for fourth.”
Walter also has Skyerush’s better credentialed stablemate Streama, a dual Group 1 winner at three, heading towards this year’s Myer Classic, the Stratum four-year-old last seen winning the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day.
