2012 Moonee Valley Vase Tips? It’s A Dundeel

It’s A Dundeel is the undefeated, odd-on favourite for the fifth on Cox Plate Day but is the Victoria Derby-bound youngster also the Races.com.au tip to win the Moonee Valley Vase 2012?

It's A Dundeel

It's A Dundeel looks near impossible to beat in the 2012 Moonee Valley Vase this Cox Plate Day

Due to run at 3:20pm (AEST) on Saturday, this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) features just seven three-year-olds with Murray Baker’s flying Kiwi galloper It’s A Dundeel scaring off the majority of the contenders.

With five wins from as many starts to their name to date the High Chaparral colt is definitely the one to beat here as they got the better of hot favouirte Proisir, a single figure chance for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Saturday’s meeting, last start in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

But at $1.20 in the Moonee Valley Vase odds at bookmaker.com.au is It’s A Dundeel the one to back?

Or will they suffer their own shock defeat as happened to Proisir at the hands of a longer priced Vase hopeful such as the Mark Kavanagh-trained Super Cool ($7).

#1 It’s A Dundeel ($1.20)

Hard to see It’s A Dundeel running anything but first here as they step right back in class after a Group 1 win over odds-on favourite Proisir. The rest of this field are going up in class which also works to their advantage. This race will run like trackwork for them, they are just getting a feel for the Melbourne way of going before they run in the Victoria Derby next Saturday. They are really short but it’s better than bank interest and they will still be unbeaten come Sunday morning.

#2 Viking Star ($13)

Good value here for the place from progressive Red Ransom gelding. They have been in excellent form back at home at Adelaide with two wins and a second from their last three starts, most recently going down by just a nose in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes (1800m). Not much of a stretch for them distance wise here and they beat fellow Vase rivals Nisos (3rd), Prisoner Of War (4th) and If I Could (5th) in the Hill Smith.

#4 Super Cool ($7)

Nicely bred Fastnet Rock gelding from a Kingmambo mare Queen Mother faces an acid test class-wise here having raced in an RST 82 at Caulfield on Thousand Guineas Day over the mile but they caught the eye then running a brave second and with a bit of luck can finish in the money again here.
