Red Anchor Stakes 2012 Field & Barriers

A smart field of three-year-olds has been accepted for one of the six Group races on the Cox Plate Day program in Melbourne this Saturday including the Anthony Freedman-trained Chosen Moment for the 2012 Red Anchor Stakes.

Cavalry Rose

Cavalry Rose is likely to bypass the Red Anchor Stakes and run Friday night at Moonee Valley instead

Registered this year as the Telstra PhoneWords Stakes and due to run as Moonee Valley Race 4 at 2:45pm (AEST), the $150,000 Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) drew a final field of nine hopefuls.

To wear the No. 1 saddlecloth with Craig Williams aboard in gate three is perennial runner-up Chosen Moment who has finished second in their past four runs.

The smart grey Choisir colt enjoyed two stakes placings in Adelaide during the autumn and resumed last month when a narrow second to Daytona Grey over this track and distance.

One three-year-old in the Red Anchor Stakes 2012 field that does know how to win is the Gerald Ryan-trained Cavalry Rose in gate six.

The Charge Forward filly was last seen taking out the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on October 13 and has been dually accepted this Cox Plate Carnival also among the final field for the $120,000 Listed Crockett Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

The Manikato Stakes Night feature may be the way connections are leaning at this stage with jockey Nash Rawiller booked for the ride.

No jockey has been named as yet for the Red Anchor meanwhile, with Rawiller engaged to ride rival galloper Hidden Warrior.

Drawn in the extreme outside gate Paul Perry’s Hidden Dragon gelding Hidden Warrior won their first-up race at Newcastle last month and was last seen running a close second over 1100m at Canterbury at the start of October, Rawiller aboard for both runs.

The other big name hopeful for the Red Anchor Stakes meanwhile is the Robert Smerdon-trained Fastnet Rock filly Saturn Rock.

Coming off two Group 3 minor placings Saturn Rock ran third to the brilliant Snitzerland second-up at Moonee Valley in the Champagne Stakes before her third to Cavalry Rose in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes.

Two lesser-known last start winners are also in the mix with Leon Corstens’ Choisir gelding Stars In The Sky and the Mick Price-trained Vicario drawn ideally in barriers two and one respectively.
