Geelong Cup 2012 – Betting Tips

With the last two Melbourne Cup winners Dunaden and Americain coming through the Geelong Cup (2400m) the Group 3 race has become a crucial spring event.

The 2012 Geelong Cup features just seven horses but almost the entire field are either vying for a spot in Australia’s biggest race or using it as a lead-up.

The current favourite is French Stayer Brigantin ($2.70) who will be having his first start in Australia and he sits just ahead of the John Gosden-trained Gatewood ($3.20) in the market.

In what should be an open contest, the Geelong Cup is set to be dominated by overseas horses with Mick Kent-trained import Tac De Boistron ($5.00) the next best in betting.

The top Australian horses in the market are Herbert Power Stakes third placegetter Exceptionally ($6.50) and Maluckyday ($7.50).

It’s an important race to take note of heading towards the Melbourne Cup and if you can’t work out the winner keep reading as the Races.com.au experts are here to deliver their very best winning tips.

The Winner

#2 Tac De Boistron $5.00

We’ve seen time and time again in recent years how much better the European stayers are than Australians and Tac De Boistron brings with him an outstanding record.

An ultra-consistent stayer, Tac De Boistron has finished fourth at Group 1 level in France, form which has been proven to hold up in Australia.

At his last start in France before arriving in Australia the son of Take Risks won a Group 2 race over 2800m in which he beat Shahwardi who has since come out and won the Herbert Power Stakes in Australia.

The Placings

#5 Exceptionally $6.50 and #1 Maluckyday $7.50

Exceptionally has been consistent all spring and there is no reason she can’t again be in the mix here.

The Ekraar mare gets in well with the minimum weight and is coming off strong second in the Naturalism Stakes and the Herbert Power Stakes.

Maluckyday gave a strong indication he is ready to return to the sort of form that saw him run second in the 2010 Melbourne Cup when he finished second to Tanby in the Bart Cummings (2500m) on October 6.

Has won at the distance and is fourth up and nearing peak form ahead of the Melbourne Cup.
